Tip from Nata – Veľký Rozsutec

Some time ago I brought you a tip for a not-so-quite sunset at Čereňova skala near Liptovský Mikuláš. How about we look at a real sunset today? One that we will sit at, have dinner with, that we will really trample on and enjoy for a long enough time?

From the Ostredok hotel in the Low Tatras, we are moving less than 2 hours to Štefanová in Terchová near Žilina. Veľký Rozsutec is a hill in Mala Fatra with an altitude of over 1600 meters. And it is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful hills in Slovakia.

Today we park at the parking lot in Štefanová and after the green sign we head to the Medziholie saddle. After about an hour and a half, at a more relaxed pace and on the whole pleasant terrain, we arrive at the Medziholie saddle. The sun is still high enough, but don't be fooled. The more difficult part of the journey comes now.

We continue following the green sign towards Veľký Rozsutec. The ascent is getting steeper, stony, and the minutes until sunset are ticking away. But during the entire ascent we can observe wonderful views on the rocky cliffs. In this section, you also need to prepare for the ascent along the chains, which is of course manageable.

After overcoming the most intensive height meters on stones and chains, we come to a signpost that informs us of a 5-minute walk to the top of Veľké Rozsutec.

The sun is slowly setting, the golden hour is coming, and on the way to the top we can only enjoy the wonderful views in every direction. We find a nice place and can enjoy dinner with a breathtaking view.

On the way down, we go from the Medziholie saddle in the dark, so headlamps and loud communication are a must. We went in a larger group and the descent was safe, we did not meet any forest dwellers.

But even if this entire hike was not supposed to be sunset hiking, I can recommend you with a clear conscience to walk to Veľký Rozsutec even on any fine day. The effect is guaranteed.

Length: 11,3 km

Total time: 4 hours 20 minutes

Climbed meters: 945 m

Difficulty: due to the rocky terrain and chains, previous climbing experience is definitely required
